Job Description

Critical Care Nurses (ICU/CCU) provide direct and individualized nursing care to patients based on the application of scientific nursing principles. In addition to general nursing care, responsibilities of Critical Care Nurses include (but are not limited to): ƒ Consults and coordinates with health care team members to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care plans ƒ Prepares and administers (orally, subcutaneously, through an IV) and records prescribed medications. Reports adverse reactions to medications or treatments in accordance with the policy regarding the administration of medications by a licensed registered nurse ƒ Provides basic, bedside care ƒ Initiates patient education plan, as prescribed by physician. Teaches patients and significant others how to manage their illness/injury, by explaining: post-treatment home care needs, diet/nutrition/exercise programs, self-administration of medication and rehabilitation ƒ Records patients’ medical information and vital signs ƒ Orders, interprets and evaluates diagnostic tests to identify and assess patient’s condition ƒ Takes samples for lab work, orders prescribed lab work and evaluates/interprets lab reports ƒ Prepares equipment and aids physician during examination and treatment of patient ƒ Responds to life-saving situations based upon nursing standards and protocol ƒ Records all care information concisely, accurately and completely, in a timely manner, in the appropriate format and on the appropriate forms ƒ Applies Hemodynamic, Phlebotomy and IV protocols ƒ Monitors and adjusts specialized equipment used on patients, and interprets and records electronic displays, such as intracranial pressures, central venous pressures, pulmonary artery pressures, and cardiac rhythms from cardiac monitors, respirators, ventilators, manometers, oxygen pumps, etc. ƒ Monitors catheters, leads and tubing for proper placement and functioning ƒ Initiates corrective action whenever information from monitoring/life support equipment shows adverse symptomatology RONARA STAFFING INC. is an Equal Opportunity Employer ƒ Acts as patient advocate by supporting the basic rights, values and beliefs of the patient ƒ Communicates to family/significant others appropriate information on patient’s condition ƒ Performs other position-related duties as assigned, depending on assignment setting Depending on setting, may also: ƒ Direct care provided by licensed practical nurses and nursing aides ƒ Float among various clinical services, where qualified and competent Other Responsibilities ƒ Completes required orientation as directed by facility ƒ Follows facility and OSHA safety rules and procedures while on assignment ƒ Follows facility and RSS Unusual Occurrence Protocol ƒ Respects cultural and religious practices of patients ƒ Upholds HIPAA regulations ƒ Punctual and dependent for assigned/confirmed shifts Position Requirements ƒ Graduate of an accredited nursing program ƒ Current nursing license, in good standing with the State licensing board ƒ Minimum of one (1) year Critical Care experience ƒ Federal-, State- and RSS-required credentials current and on file ƒ Cognitive skills as related to the position Working Conditions Because patients need round-the-clock care, working hours include days, nights, weekends and holidays. The number of patients assigned per shift will vary with facility and specialty, if applicable. Nurses spend considerable time walking, bending, stretching and standing; they assist in patient transfers. Nurses must guard against back injury because they may have to assist CNAs in patient lifts and transfers; they must follow proper body mechanics and procedures for lifting/moving patients. Nurses may face hazards from exposure to chemicals and infectious diseases. In addition, they treat patients that may be confused, irrational, agitated, and/or uncooperative. Physical Demands ƒ Ability to lift twenty (20) pounds. Moving, lifting or transferring of patients may involve lifting of up to fifty (50) pounds, as well as assist with weights of more than one-hundred (100) pounds. ƒ Ability to stand for extended periods ƒ Fine motor skills ƒ Visual acuity The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. The overall physical demand rating for a job of the nurse falls within the Medium classification (exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work) according to the Dictionary of Occupational Titles.
